Learning From the Past: Achieving Lasting Health Beyond Food And Exercise

What it means to be truly healthy has certainly changed over time. Years of experience working as a private chef (ahem, I mean mom) have taught me valuable lessons in frugality (keen marketing doesn’t equal quality, read labels), time management and how to throw together a relatively healthy meal that everyone will eat (still a challenge).

I’ve made mistakes including ones like indulging my kids if they decide to protest dinner. It doesn’t matter if it’s a new recipe. It’s remarkable really, with just a whiff or micro taste they make up their minds not to partake.

“I’m not eating that; I hate casseroles!”

“But you haven’t even tried it” I say.

I have decided over time that they should not have a choice. Food is food and if I am going to take the time and energy to cook something healthy for them each and every night, they’re going to eat it, and with options off the table, they do.

Another thing I’ve learned besides the importance of eating wholesome foods is that although food is important, it is only part of the journey towards health. As I grow older I’ve learned that lasting health is a multifaceted journey.

I have always struggled with anxiety which can be acute at times so I decided to learn more about it. While researching the possible causes behind this condition I came across an article written by Melli O’Brien a mindfulness and meditation teacher. The article titled How To Overcome Negative Thinking explains how thoughts are connected to emotions as well as the fact that so many of our thoughts are on a sort of ‘auto-play’. They just keep playing over and over again, like a broken record. I guess that’s o.k. unless of course they’re negative thoughts. If the negative ones go unchecked and are repeating in your head, they stimulate negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, self-doubt and even anger. Negative emotions can lead to bad decision making which can directly impact our lives.

I’m going to add mindfulness to my routine of wholesome eating and exercise and I’m hoping that you will too. If we become aware of our thoughts, we can change our emotional responses. If your mind is healthy your body will follow. Keep on eating wholesome food and exercising but take a step towards self-reflection with the goal of achieving true health and wellness.

A good way to kick off feeling good is to eat clean. Try this liver cleansing tonic. Your liver is your body’s filter, so it’s good to clean it every now and then. Before you start your cleanse, it is important to eat clean. Avoid eating meat and dairy for two days. Stick to wholesome, unprocessed foods including plenty of leafy greens, legumes, fruits and grains. On the third day, prepare the Liver Cleanse first thing in the morning. Wait two to four hours before eating your next meal. You can drink non-sweetened liquids (without dairy) after the cleanse and before your first meal.


Liver Cleanse

Inspired by the classic Consomme from Julia Child’s Mastering The Art Of French Cooking 1961


-1 clove of garlic, minced

-juice of 1 whole lemon

-2-4 tablespoons of warm water


Pour the lemon juice into a small cup and add the minced garlic and water. Stir well and drink. This tonic is quite tart and paired with the raw garlic it’s best to just swallow it without sipping! It may not taste pleasant, but it’s effective.
